Dear GSCN members, dear colleagues,

The Annual GSCN Conference 2018 welcomed more than 400 participants, offered three joining symposia and attracted 28 companies to the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg from 19 - 21 September 2018.

Heidelberg was the German capital of stem cell research for three days and more – around 400 scientists from Germany and other countries met at the DKFZ to exchange new findings and technologies. This annual meeting 2018 had some new features: As a kaleidoscope, several symposia flourished along the GSCN conference: a big symposium on 13 projects about innovative stem cell technologies for individualized medicine, funded by the ministry of education and research (BMBF), a Non PI-Workshop and an ELSA-Symposium about ethical, legal and social aspects of stem cell research.

Highlights were the international key notes framing the conference with Leonard Zon, Alex Schier und William Pu, (all Cambridge, US) and Allison Bardin (Paris) as well as Jianlong Wang (New York, US). Another outstanding highlight was the Presidential Symposium with keynote speaker Steve Goldman (Rochester / Copenhagen) and the presentations of the GSCN-awardees Nina Cabezas Wallscheid (GSCN Junior Investigator Award), Maria Elena Torres-Padilla (GSCN Female Scientist Award) and Maja Milanovic / Clemens Schmitt (GSCN Publication of the Year).

The conference offered space for a large industry exhibition with 28 booths, two interesting poster sessions, 60 talks, a get-together and a GSCN Network evening. Lots of possibilities to network, foster relationships, discuss with collaborators and find out about new technologies. A well-visited public event on Friday evening showed the perspectives of stem cell research to an interested lay audience in the Mathematikon / Heidelberg.

The online follow-up survey gave a very positive feedback, best summarized in the following anonymous quotes: “Networking is great and clearly in the heart of the conference. Close proximity to leaders in the field. Relevance of presented topics. / Great presentations, very good keynotes, good opportunities for networking.” The conference pictures will be online here.

The 7th GSCN Conference will be in Berlin on 23 till 25 Sept. 2019 – please save the date!
