LEBAO: iPS technologies

    The Leibniz Research Laboratories for Biotechnology and Artificial Organs (LEBAO) at Hannover Medical School (MHH) are one of the central institutions of the Cluster of Excellence "REBIRTH" and closely linked to the Department of Cardiothoracic, Transplantation and Vascular Surgery of the MHH. Within the LEBAO our research focuses on different aspects of stem cell biology, regenerative medicine and organ transplantation. The close alignment between basic research and the clinic allows focused approaches in research and development, and promotes an accelerated translation of innovative therapeutic concepts into clinical practice. We collaborate closely with numerous academic and industrial partners on a national and international level.

    Currently, there are three areas of research at the LEBAO. Besides the development of a bioartificial lung, pluripotent stem cell research and cardiorespiratory tissue engineering are key research foci of the LEBAO.

    Pluripotent Stem Cell research at the LEBAO focuses on the following topics: derivation and genome engineering of iPS cells for disease modelling, molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular and respiratory differentiation, drug screening and cellular therapies, genetic integrity of iPSCs and technologies for the mass production of iPSCs and their differentiated derivatives. We have established and optimized numerous technologies and protocols covering these aspects. Supporting interested researchers by sharing our knowledge and long standing practical experience in pluripotent stem cell research is an important mission to us.
